CBG oil: The next cannabinoid of the decade?

No doubt you’ve already heard of the two best-known cannabinoids in the world, THC and CBD. Now a third cannabinoid, CBG (cannabigerol), which is found in small amounts amongst hundreds of other cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, could be linked to positive health benefits of its own.

Despite CBG being new to the scene with its low yield and lesser-known status, it’s increasingly making a name for itself, with researchers believing it could be the next big cannabinoid to go mainstream in the new decade.

So what makes CBG special? As well as playing a role in the overall chemical composition of the cannabis plant, CBG is part of the synthesis of other cannabinoids. It’s known as the parent substance and the first form of cannabinoids THC, CBD and CBC, which is why it’s been given the name, ‘the mother of all cannabinoids’.

CBG starts out as an acidic-based cannabinoid, CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). CBGA is seven cannabinoids in one and creates the genesis of not only seven analogues of itself, but also the acidic precursors for all other major cannabinoids, primarily converting to THCA, CBDA or CBCA as the cannabis plant matures. This genesis process is also the reason why there’s little CBG in most hemp and cannabis plants.

Then through heat and sunlight, the acid burns off and the cannabinoids synthesise into the likes of THC, CBD, CBC, CBG, CBN or THCY. CBGA only creates CBG during ‘decarboxylation’ when the remaining CBGA is heated during the decarboxylation process.

Like CBD, CBG binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), affecting receptors in the brain and throughout the rest of the body. CBG also has the ability to act as a mild CB1 receptor antagonist, without the psychoactive effects of THC.

There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that CBD relieves anxiety, reduces inflammation, enhances focus or soothes the body in other ways, but CBG could be the next hottest cannabinoid, as the demand for cannabis oil-infused products is at an all-time high.

While more studies on CBG need to be done to confirm its benefits, research indicates that it could be the fourth chemotype of the cannabis plant. And the past three decades’ worth of research has shown very positive effects that could contribute towards the likes of pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, reduced anxiety, nausea, improved symptoms of diseases and even anti-cancer effects.

Although the benefits of CBG are still being explored, it’s definite that cannabis is one of the biggest initiatives on the medical research forefront in the 2020 decade, and CBG could be one of its newest marvels, just like CBD has performed.
